BAM BAM KazakhstaN !!
Almaty was the former capital of Kazakhstan and the 2nd city I visited in the country.
I have only spend 2 days in the city and found it a very busier city then Astana, alot of traffic, but taking the metro is a good way to move around and not many people seem to take the metro, it was empty everytime I took the tube.
Things to visit are Panfilov Park with the War Memorial and the Zenkov Cathedral which is an Orthodox Cathedral built without any nails, amazing building, very colorful.
Republic Square in the centre of the city with the Apple monument. There is a nicer Apple monument fountain on Kok Tobe hill from which you also have a panoramic view over the immense city that Almaty is. Almaty means city of apple trees in Kazakh, although I really didn’t pay attention to the presence of apple trees, but maybe that can explain the apple monuments.
The top of Kok Tobe Hill can be reached by a cable line, there is a park with as said before an Apple fountain and view over the city but also a Beatles monument to have your picture taken with as the fifth Beatle.
Also take a ride down hill with the fastcoaster, it’s really fun. It doesn’t go all the way down as it stops at a certain point, and then the little car you’re in is pulled back up hill again, so you have to take the cable line back if you want to go down again to the city.
